COLD HOBBING INSTEAD OF SPARK EROSION

By replacing metal-cutting or erosion procedures with our cold hobbing process, we can significantly reduce your costs in the manufacture of dies.

The comparison of manufacturing costs between erosion machining and the cold hobbing process, only takes into consideration the inner mould of the dies for tools with 18, 48 and 96 cavities. In regard to the surface quality of the two processes, the surface No. 24 according to Charmilles Technologies VDI 3400 was selected in the erosion process. Even a tool with 18 cavities revealed a significant difference in costs.

A hob manufactured as a single piece is needed to form the internal mould of the die. This relatively expensive cost must then be calculated as an additional surcharge on the die. This supplementary cost for the hob, already pays for itself in a tool with 18 cavities. But a tool with 48 or even with 96 cavities pays back this extra cost numerous times over. Compared to the sinker EDM, a large number of dies can be pressed using cold hobbing.

The following production steps have been taken into account to establish the manufacture costs of both methods:

Spark erosion manufacturing process:

  • Raw material
  • Turning the blank
  • Producing the EDM sinker electrodes
  • Spark eresion of the inner mould

Cold hobbing manufacturing process:

  • Raw material
  • Turning the blank
  • Manufacture of a hob
  • Cold hobbing the inner mould

In addition to the cost savings and more efficient production time, all the dies have an improved surface quality and increased durability without any reworking (additional costs).

WHERE QUALITY SETS STANDARDS

We have been producing dies with different mouldings for over 30 years, such as the PCO 1810 and PCO 1881 for the beverage industry, as well as dies for general caps. Thanks to the cold hobbing process, we can manufacture these dies for you in next to no time with a high surface quality and without any reworking. All our dies boast precise dimensions, exact geometry and an extended service life.
